Resolution on District Attorney endorsements

UFT Resolutions

WHEREAS, in their decades of public service and in their current terms as District Attorneys for Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, Melinda Katz, Darcel Clark, and Michael McMahon have been strong advocates for UFT members; and

WHEREAS, in her over 25 years of public service, Melinda Katz has been a strong advocate for UFT members, from her time in the NY State Assembly, the City Council, as Queens Borough President, and as current Queens District Attorney; and

WHEREAS, as Borough President, Melinda invested million of dollars in schools, and fought tirelessly to remove trailers from our Queens schools and to prevent school closings; and WHEREAS, Melinda led elected officials in supporting the educators at Queens in their fights against problematic principals; and

WHEREAS, in her decades of distinguished service on the bench, in the Bronx District Attorney’s office, and currently as Bronx District Attorney, Darcel Clark, has been a passionate advocate for UFT members; and

WHEREAS, as the first woman elected Bronx District Attorney and the first African American woman elected District Attorney in New York State, and a lifelong Bronx resident District Attorney Clark has been and continues to be a trailblazer; and

WHEREAS, as a graduate of Truman HS and the product of the public school system, District Attorney Clark has invested in the city’s teenagers by creating career pathways and has used her office to foster community service and early childhood literacy; and

WHEREAS, in his almost 18 years of public service, Michael McMahon, has been a strong advocate for UFT members throughout his career, from his time in the City Council, to his time as a member of Congress and now as Staten Island District Attorney; and

WHEREAS, as Michael has partnered with us on programs to educate students about the real dangers of drugs and to help combat the opioid epidemic and domestic violence; and WHEREAS, as District Attorney, Michael has supported our nurses at Staten Island University Hospital (South Site); therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the UFT endorses Melinda Katz in her primary for Queens District Attorney, Darcel Clark in her primary election for Bronx District Attorney, and Michael McMahon in his primary election for Staten Island District Attorney, as we believe they will continue to be strong allies in the arena of justice for our members, our schools and our boroughs.
