I hope you had a happy and healthy winter break and holiday season. We faced challenges in 2018, including the Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court anti-labor decision, but we achieved major victories as well with a new contract and paid parental leave. I want to thank you all for being active and engaged members of the Hearing Education Services Chapter.
Thanks to your participation, the new DOE-UFT contract was ratified. Your concerns as a functional chapter were heard. The UFT negotiated an expansion of the authority of UFT consultation committees at the school level that will give us a meaningful mechanism to raise and address issues of space, workload and lack of basic instructional supplies.
We meet every month with District 75 Administrative Assistant Superintendent Helen Kaufman to discuss and find solutions to important chapter issues. If you are interested in joining our consultation committee, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I've visited the HES related services providers in every borough and I will continue to visit the HES self-contained classes as the school year goes by.
Stay connected with the UFT this year. For news alerts and important information about your rights and benefits as a UFT member, sign up on the UFT website, opt in for text messaging, "like" the UFT on Facebook, follow the UFT on Twitter and read the New York Teacher.
Use the union’s app, UFT-Mobile, or visit the member-only section of UFT.org, to access discounts for apparel, entertainment and travel. You can download the mobile app for both Apple and Android phones.
Again, thank you for all your support last year, from participating in this year's Walk4Hearing to attending our professional development events. I wish you a wonderful and productive new year!
