45-day enrollment period begins May 1 for Catastrophe Major Medical Plan

NYSUT Member Benefits has issued the following information about the Catastrophe Major Medical Plan:

As you may be aware, the Catastrophe Major Medical (CMM) Plan has been closed to new participants since July 2011. On Jan. 1, 2014, the CMM Plan became self-insured and sponsored by the NYSUT Member Benefits Trust.

Then, effective Sept. 1, 2015, the NYSUT Member Benefits Catastrophe Major Medical Insurance Trust was named as the sponsor of the CMM Plan — replacing the Member Benefits Trust as the sponsor.

Now, the Trustees of the NYSUT Member Benefits CMM Insurance Trust are pleased to announce a limited-time, 45-day open enrollment opportunity from May 1, 2017, through June 15, 2017.

NYSUT members who are in-service and reside in New York State, along with their eligible family members, may want to take advantage of this offer. In addition, current CMM Plan participants may want to consider adding eligible family members who are not currently enrolled in the CMM Plan during this open enrollment period.

It is important to note that the current CMM Plan will be undergoing significant benefit changes, effective Jan. 1, 2018; that is also the effective date for coverage to begin for new enrollees and dependents.

Current participants will NOT have to re-enroll in the CMM Plan to remain in the Plan in 2018 and beyond. However, those individuals who would like to enroll in the Plan or enroll their dependents during this open enrollment period should review the “2018 CMM Plan Highlights” document included in the enrollment materials.

These materials will be available beginning April 17, 2017, and can be accessed by visiting the Member Benefits website and clicking on “Open Enrollment Materials — Catastrophe Major Medical Plan.”

Detailed information regarding the forthcoming changes to the CMM Plan on Jan. 1, 2018, will be sent to all current CMM participants in fall 2017.
