Dear parents, grandparents, guardians and education activists,

Save the date for our 10th annual UFT Staten Island parent conference on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at IS 2 at 333 Midland Ave. Directions »

There will be workshops, networking, food and important information for Staten Island parents. Registration will be available in September. I'll be in touch soon with more information.

This is our last newsletter of the school year. Thank you for everything you did this year for Staten Island children! I look forward to seeing you again next school year. Have a great summer.

  • Friday, June 21: Come to a free film screening of "Aquaman" from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Willowbrook Park Archery Range. Picnicking is encouraged. See the event listing »

  • Saturday, June 22: The New Dorp Library will host an event titled Music and Movement for children ages 1 to 5 and their caregivers from 11 a.m. to noon. The library is at 309 New Dorp Lane. See the event listing »

  • Saturday, June 22: Come hear some music from Birds of Chicago, courtesy of Carnegie Hall Citywide, at 2 p.m. on the South Meadow Stage at Snug Harbor Cultural Center. For full details, see the event listing »
  • Thursday, June 27: The New York City Commission on Gender Equity will host a gender equity summit from 6 to 9 p.m. at Petrides Community High School, 715 Ocean Terrace. Discuss how to involve men in the fight for gender equity, ensure greater gender diversity at all levels of public service and reduce gender-based violence. Refreshments will be served.   • Saturday, June 29: The St. George Greenmarket will be open between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the intersection of St. Mark's Place and Hyatt Street. The market, which offers local produce, cheese, meat and more, is open every Saturday and accepts SNAP/EBT and WIC payments. Find out more »
  • Saturday, June 29: Celebrate International Mud Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Clay Pit Ponds Visitors Center, 2351 Veterans Road West. There will be a mud pool, mud pie, mud craft projects and more. Find out more »
  • Saturday, June 29: There will be free admission all day at the Staten Island Children's Museum at 1000 Richmond Terrace. The museum also offers free admission on Wednesdays between 3 and 5 p.m. See the website »
  • Saturdays, June 29, July 13 and Aug. 3: Alice Austen House at 2 Hylan Blvd. will host free meditation classes at 1 p.m. on the lawn at Clear Comfort. See the flier »
  • Monday, July 1: The Mariners Harbor Library will host Space! The Cosmos for Kids, a summer reading kickoff party with music, dancing and sensory activities, at 4 p.m. The library is at 206 South Ave. See the event listing »

  • Tuesday, July 2: The South Beach Library will host Folktalk/Fable and Art Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Children are invited to hear stories from around the world and create art based on the stories. The South Beach Library is at 21-25 Robin Road. See the event listing »

  • Thursday, July 4 – Saturday, July 6: The Empire Outlets at 55 Richmond Terrace will host a three-day Fourth of July block party from noon to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday.   • Thursday, July 4: Come to Fort Wadsworth for the annual Fourth at the Fort event starting at 1 p.m. There will be tours, games for kids, a group reading of the Declaration of Independence and, at 2 p.m., a performance by the Staten Island Philharmonic. See the event listing »
  • Thursday, July 4: You can catch another performance by the Staten Island Philharmonic from 6 to 9 p.m. at Alice Austen House, 2 Hylan Blvd. After the music, watch the citywide fireworks over the water. See the event listing »

News you can use

  • $3 "Kids Club" art classes at Michaels: Kids ages 3 and older are invited to two-hour art classes on Saturdays at most Michaels craft store locations on Staten Island. Classes run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and cost $3. To find a location and class near you, visit the website »
  • Free summer meals at Staten Island libraries: Kids and teens are welcome to get free breakfasts and lunches Monday through Friday all summer long at 1,200 sites across the city, including Staten Island libraries and parks. There is no enrollment, documentation or ID required. This service will start on Thursday, June 27, and run through Friday, Aug. 30. Find a location near you »
