Summertime recharge

New York Teacher

Congratulations! You made it through the school year. Your hard work, dedication and long hours kept your school humming with purpose and activity. Now it’s time to reward yourself by trying some new things for a true summer recharge.

Here are some ideas to consider:

Get outdoors: Take a hike in your favorite park. Have you been to the botanical gardens in our city? Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx all have wonderful gardens. Visit a zoo, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Central Park, Staten Island’s Clove Lakes Park or the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden at Snug Harbor.

Yoga and meditation: Try to do one of these at least 20 minutes a day. Can’t find a location near you? Then do yoga or meditation from home using one of these six free apps that Yoga Journal recommends.

Get moving: Find new ways to get your heart rate up, such as getting off two stops earlier on your subway or bus commute, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking Manhattan’s High Line, going for a run, doing crossfit in Brooklyn Bridge Park or exploring the offerings at Chelsea Piers or city recreation centers. You can find outdoor fitness equipment in many city parks.

Cultivate new hobbies: Try gardening, a zip line over the Bronx River or free kayaking at Brooklyn Bridge Park or the Long Island Community Boathouse. Don’t miss the free outdoor movies and concerts available throughout the city this summer.

Follow healing regimes: Acupuncture, Reiki and aromatherapy using natural essential oils can help with anxiety, stress and even some physical health issues. You can also listen to soothing music, free.

Keep your mind sharp: Take an online course, pick up a new hobby, read a great book (or write one!), start a journal or create an art project.

Mental health care: Visit the UFT’s Member Assistance Program. Its summer hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Please call first to set up an appointment.
