2022 Elections (updated for the Aug. 23 primary)

Within hours after the state legislature approved new redistricting maps for the Assembly, Senate and Congress in January, and Gov. Hochul signed them into law, the election process was challenged with the filing of a Republican-backed lawsuit claiming the maps were unfairly drawn in Democrats’ favor.

Since then, the lawsuit, and subsequent legal actions involving courts from the local to federal levels, have dramatically altered the primary schedule and campaigns were thrown into disarray. In some instances, candidates decided not to run, or even to seek another office all together. You can read more about the timeline of the redistricting process, the text of the Court of Appeals decision and the resulting maps.

As a result of this chaos, two primary elections are being held this summer: June 28 & August 23. June was the primary for statewide and State Assembly offices.

The August primary will be held for candidates for Congressional and State Senate, as district lines were redrawn by the special master under the direction of the lower court. These district lines were finalized on Saturday, May 21. The NYC Board of Elections has outlined relevant dates and early voting locations.
