Transgender article

Our transgender teachers need more visibility and the article “Transgender educators seek respect, fairness for everyone,” provides some much-needed awareness of the experiences of our transgender teachers.

While we have come a long way in our support for transgender students, I am looking toward my colleagues in the UFT to continue to support transgender teachers in the same way. This means respecting names and pronouns, doing your research and intervening when bias-based remarks are made.

Together we can create affirming environments for LGBTQ students, families and staff members.

I hope that the ideas which inform your story concerning transgender educators come from the latest scientific work that is being done in that field [e.g., Johns Hopkins’ study “Sexuality and Gender: Findings from the Biological, Psychological and Social Sciences,” McHugh and Mayer].

As an over-30-year member of the UFT, I have my suspicions that the ideas are much more likely to come from the interests of the Democratic Party than from any reasoned consideration of one of our society’s most contentious issues.
