The UFT honored 900 new retirees at its annual New Retiree Luncheon at the Hilton Hotel on Nov. 24, with a special morning award ceremony for those who served as chapter leaders during their careers. UFT President Michael Mulgrew and Retired Teachers Chapter Leader Tom Murphy welcomed them and acknowledged their service to the city’s children.

UFT President Michael Mulgrew met with teachers and other staff at Brooklyn’s PS 106 on Dec. 11, a day after President Barack Obama signed the new education law reducing testing’s role and Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s task force called for a rewrite of Common Core standards. Mulgrew then moved on to meet with chapter leaders at nearby IS 349 and IS 347.

December is always an exciting time in NYC. We have a lot to celebrate at the UFT as well.

The UFT celebrates the accomplishments of its chapters, the heart and soul of the UFT, at Teacher Union Day each November.

The days of test and punish are over. After a disastrous experiment with the Common Core standards — implemented without proper curriculum or teacher training — New York now has a chance to get things right.
