Tailgate party for Thompson at Cyclones Game
More than 1,800 UFT members joined a spirited tailgate party before the June 20 Brooklyn Cyclones game in Coney Island to hear from the union-endorsed mayoral candidate Bill Thompson. He told the enthusiastic crowd, “We start fresh on Jan. 1, 2014,” promising that “we will work together to change the direction of this city and restore respect to our teachers.”
Friends of District 75 Awards Ceremony
The Skyline Princess left the Chelsea Pier on May 31 with 138 UFT members aboard celebrating the Friends of District 75 Eighth Annual Awards Ceremony honoring those who have made an outstanding contribution to the district. Donald Albright, the chapter leader at P 186 in the Bronx received the Special Recognition for School-Based Activism Award.
NYC Coaches Association/UFT Spring Awards Dinner
A pair of Queens high school coaches were the major award winners at the NYC Coaches Association/UFT’s annual spring awards dinner on June 19 at the Clearview Golf Club in Bayside. Howard Coval, who coaches boys’ varsity golf and boys’ junior varsity basketball at William C. Bryant HS, was named this year’s Man of the Year. Elvis Haniff, who coaches boys’ and girls’ varsity volleyball at Flushing HS, received the organization’s Coaches Award.
