UFT Member Help Programs
In addition to all the other rights and benefits provided to UFT members through their union contracts, the UFT has designed a number of programs that specifically help members with a variety of life circumstances and challenges.
Member Assistance Program (MAP) — MAP offers short-term counseling and outside referrals to members to help them deal with issues like substance abuse, trauma, bereavement, domestic violence and other issues.
Victim Support Program (VSP) — VSP, co-sponsored by the UFT and the DOE, provides psychological support and practical assistance for staff members who are victims of workplace violence.
Peer Intervention Program — Need support to improve your teaching? Apply to get confidential one-on-one help from experienced colleagues who will create an individualized, year-long professional development plan with you to emphasize your strengths.
Health and Cancer Helpline — The Health and Cancer Helpline provides free, confidential assistance to UFT members and their covered dependents who may be diagnosed with a major medical illness such as cancer, stroke, or diabetes. This support service, staffed by licensed social workers helps members plan a leave of absence and guides callers to resources including accessing union benefits, support groups, and health care professionals. To speak with the Health and Cancer Helpline, call 212-539-0515 between 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Summer hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Retiree Social Services — The Retiree Social Services Department provides assistance and support to retirees across the country with a range of social services, such as information and referrals, short-term counseling and weekly telephone reassurance calls.
Smoking Cessation Program — The UFT, in partnership with the city’s Department of Health, offers a comprehensive smoking cessation program for UFT members, including quit smoking medications, support counseling and referrals for prescription medications.
Wellness Programs and Initiatives — The mayor's Office of Labor Relations and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene have launched WorkWell NYC, an initiative designed to support New York City employees in getting and staying healthy.
