Leap to Teacher: A unique program for paraprofessionals

LEAP to Teacher is a collaborative program between the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies and eight participating CUNY colleges. LEAP to Teacher provides free, specialized support services for paraprofessionals and teachers employed by the DOE who are pursuing higher education and advancing their careers in teaching or any other field of study. LEAP to Teacher is currently offering services across eight CUNY campuses (Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, Brooklyn College, College of Staten Island, Lehman College, Medgar Evers College, Queens College and the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies).

The LEAP to Teacher program provides a full range of support services to undergraduate and graduate students. These services include:

  • Free college preparation courses (elementary algebra & English reading/writing).
  • Assistance with the pre-admissions, application and registration process.
  • Ongoing advisement from pre-admission through graduation to ensure a positive and rewarding college experience.
  • Tutoring services for writing improvement and assignment comprehension.
  • Personal statement workshops and assistance with preparing resumes, cover letters and essays.
  • Student success workshops.
  • Free workshops and courses to prepare for the New York State teacher certification exam.
