Maternity Workshop

Nov. 17 & Dec. 8, 2009, Maternity Workshops will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Queens UFT office. RSVP to Karla Jordan at kjordan@uft.org. Limited space is available, no un-registered members will be allowed into the workshop. Include your due date, file number, non-DOE e-mail address, school, district and phone number when reserving a spot. You will be registered for workshop according to your due date. This workshop is for women only (no exceptions, unless under Physicians care or special circumstances).

9 a.m.–1 p.m., at UFT headquarters. A Choral Workshop led by John Jacobson in conjunction with Hal Leonard Corporation. This workshop is designed for choral music teachers of all levels. Q&A session at the end of the day. Participants will receive a packet of music for all grade levels. Music will also be available for purchase. Educator Workshop: New York During the Great Depression – The Federal Theater Project
1–3 p.m., at the Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Avenue, at 103rd Street, Manhattan. Teachers of all grades are welcome; the workshop content is geared towards middle and high school teachers and correlates to middle school Social Studies Standards 1, 2, 4, and 5. It supports ELL Intermediate Reading and Writing. Explore materials from the Museum’s exhibitions examining the way artists responded to political, social, and economic change during the Great Depression. The workshop will conclude with a hands-on exercise analyzing a Living Newspaper play, created as part of the New Deal’s Federal Theater Project. Materials will be provided. Participants will view a demonstration of why reading words and texts can be so difficult for students, especially when English is not their first language. This session will help teachers think about their students’ reading and how they can improve literacy instruction. Focuses on ongoing, everyday informal assessment, with emphasis on learning how to differentiate assessment to match the learning styles and intelligences of students while maintaining classroom discipline. Learn how to keep records of student information and data that can be used to guide planning and instruction. Educators will learn about the roles and lifestyles of children in New York City over the past 150 years. Participants will partake in a gallery tour, an educator-led workshop and will receive pre-and post-visit materials to use in the classroom. Read Out Loud! Family Literacy Festival
11 a.m.– 3 p.m., at PS 125, The Ralph Bunche School, 425 W 123rd St (between Amsterdam Ave. and Morningside Ave). District 5 in Collaboration with Morningside Area Alliance is pleased to announce a district wide Family Literacy Day. Families and children are invited to the annual Read Out Loud! a family literacy festival. Everything is free for families – books, storytelling, creative arts activities and workshops. Children’s authors will read aloud from their books and sign copies to give away to participating children. This event is geared to students and families in District 5 elementary schools.
