Get Involved
UFT members are involved in the life of the union at every level, and the more active they are, the stronger our union is. Whether it’s opposing budget cuts or school closings, working with community partners or organizing to make sure special ed students get the services they’re entitled to, the union is fighting for our children, our schools and our members. Find out here about the many campaigns and initiatives in which we are involved.
Current Campaigns
The NYC Department of Education refuses to help struggling schools, and thousands of children are being hurt as a result of this neglect. Twenty-five more city schools face closure or truncation of grades — 11 of them opened by the Bloomberg administration — as the DOE continues to insist that the best reform strategy for struggling schools is to shut them down, not fix them.
>>The right to vote is the heart of our democracy. Throughout our history, Americans have fought for and died for this most basic right. But today that right is under attack like never before. In 2011 alone, two-thirds of state legislatures introduced laws that undermine the right to vote.
>>The UFT has launched a campaign to help combat bullying in our schools. It’s called Be BRAVE Against Bullying; BRAVE stands for Building Respect, Acceptance and Voice through Education. The campaign will provide educators with the tools, knowledge and support to be pro-active in confronting and stopping bullying. It builds on the city’s Respect for All campaign.
>>The New York City Parents Union, a citywide group of public-school parents, has started a petition to Mayor Michael Bloomberg demanding that he take action to provide every child in our city equal access to a quality public education.

UFT ACTS
Schools work best when educators are respected and when they are included in program and policy planning. That’s why the UFT is helping charter educators who want a union.
