Job Opportunities

For prospective applicants:

In these times of fiscal uncertainty, the New York City Department of Education has imposed a hiring freeze on teaching and other positions except for designated “shortage” areas.

Currently, these shortage areas are:

  • Special education
  • General science, earth science, chemistry and physics
  • Speech Improvement
  • Bilingual licenses
  • Latin
  • Chinese

This list may change. Find the most current list in the Careers in NYC Schools section of the DOE website.

If you apply for a teaching position in the New York City public school system, you must have New York State certification in the area and level you want to teach. The certification requirements for all areas along with the various pathways to certification can be found in the certification section of the New York State Education Department website.

If you have New York State certification, go to the New York City Department of Education’s TeachNYC website for more information about the application process.

The New York City Department of Education also hosts recruitment events and other information sessions for prospective applicants. Due to the uncertainty of hiring needs for the upcoming school year, there are no scheduled events at this time.

Transfers

Teachers who wish to transfer to another school for any reason may do so using the Open Market Transfer Plan. The open period for applying to transfer from your current school to a different one runs from April 15 to Aug. 7 each year. During which time, principals post anticipated as well as approved vacancies on the DOE’s Open Market Transfer Plan website.

For more information, go to Transfer Opportunities.

Per session opportunities

Teachers can learn about school-related activities that require teacher supervision and that take place beyond the regular school day. The DOE website lists vacancies for the school year and provides information about how to apply for positions. The site provides per session guidelines.

Support for ATRs and others in excess

Register in the Open Market system: ATRs and others in excess must register in the Open Market system to obtain their assignment for the first day of school if they do not secure a position prior to that time. In addition, registration is required, under the recent agreement between the DOE and the UFT, in order to be eligible for consideration, and contacted for interviews, for vacancies.

The June 2011 budget agreement that averted teacher layoffs also included changes and clarifications in how teachers in the Absent Teacher Reserve are deployed. Teachers in the ATR pool now have a real opportunity to fill full vacancies and long-term leaves in their school districts and a clear pathway to a permanent placement.

The Teacher Hiring Support Center on the DOE website provides ATRs and other excessed teachers with information and support in finding a new position. The website not only lists upcoming DOE job fairs and workshops, but also provides job-search advice.
