    The Office of Guidance and School Counseling will host a citywide professional development day for elementary and middle school counselors & social workers on Election Day. The theme will be Promoting Pro-Social Behavior: Positive, Equitable, Progressive Discipline.

    We will only be able to accommodate the first 200 school counselors and social workers who register.  Lunch will be provided.

    Geography Awareness Week is November 16-22, and this year's theme is The Geography of Food. Join us for a special workshop.

    To celebrate, the host will present a menu of resources and ideas from the National Geographic Society. Attendees will "dine" on concepts that connect with this theme, and participants will have plenty of food for thought in discussing how to use these activities to engage English-language learners and their families.

    The committee welcomes back author Ruthanne Lum McCunn to speak on her latest book, “Chinese Yankee.”

    Chinese Yankee tells the true story of Thomas Sylvanus, born Ah Yee Way and brought to America in the mid 1850’s for schooling but was enslaved. At the age of 16, he ran to freedom and enlisted in the Union Army.

    This is a free event, registration is not required. Refreshments will be served.

    Broken into two five-hour classes, our 10-hour course for informal providers covers everything from food and fire safety to behavior management and appropriate discipline to the specific educational and nutritional needs of infants. Informal providers who complete the full 10-hour course, including both class A and B, will receive a certificate and be eligible to apply for a higher, “enhanced” market rate from the city.

    Join us for this exciting workshop. Representatives from North Shore Animal League will provide teachers with an overview of the Mutt-I-Grees preK-12 Curriculum.

    The program combines activities for increasing responsibility and empathy for animals with a focus on enhancing literacy skills and student ability to get along with others – as well as ideas for service projects.

    Each teacher will receive a Mutt-i-grees backpack with information about the program. Workshop is limited to 40 participants, so register early. Registration fee is $5. Professional development hours available. See the flier for details.
