UFT night at a Brooklyn Cyclones game has become an early-summer tradition, and this year was no different: More than 1,500 UFT members and their families watched the Cyclones take on the Hudson Valley Renegades at MCU Park in Coney Island on June 27. “There was tailgating in the lot sponsored by the UFT Bronx borough office,” said Emil Pietromonaco, who, at the time, had just a few days remaining as the UFT secretary. Pietromonaco, who is retiring this year, was supposed to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, but he opted to have his 11-year-old grandson, Christian, do the honors. He was one of Pietromonaco’s seven grandchildren at the game. Pietromonaco said Christian “threw a lightning strike.” Attendees had an additional treat: Jose Reyes, just reacquired by the New York Mets, was playing with the Cyclones, a Mets farm team. To top it off, the Cyclones pulled out a 6-5 victory in extra innings.
