You may be enjoying your retirement benefits now, but you know how hard we had to fight to fix the pension tiers. Our fellow UFT members who are in Tier 6 now need our help. As it stands, they must work until age 63 to collect an unreduced pension. You can help them by joining us at a Tier 6 rally in Albany with NYSUT on March 8! The rally will be full of performances, activism and union solidarity.

Save the date for the 2026 UFT Early Childhood Conference. Attend day of creativity, growth, discovery and collaboration as we shape the future of education for our youngest learners. Welcoming educators serving 3-K, pre-K, K, 1st grade and 2nd grade, this event offers an opportunity to earn four CTLE hours from relevant workshops, hear from an inspiring keynote speaker and meet with colleagues from across the city. The UFT's annual Black History Month film series will run from Thursday, Jan. 29, to Thursday, Feb. 26, this school year. The theme is "Echoes of Resilience: Stories of Heritage and Struggle." From the preserved traditions of the Gullah Geechee people to the frontlines of health care activism and personal battles for identity and survival, these films celebrate the enduring power of our community. Each screening will be followed by a guided discussion. Join this session to view the documentary Takeover.

Through interactive strategies and real classroom examples, educators will learn how language-rich environments honor every child's voice while building confidence and joy.

Staten Island UFT members are invited to attend a workshop on sabbaticals. Teachers, psychologists, school counselors and social workers with 14 or more years of service and high school teachers with 7 or more years of service are eligible for a one-year sabbatical to enhance teaching skills or restore health during illness. At this workshop, you'll learn about the application process and guidelines.

High school educators may bring their students to Future in Focus, an event to show public school students what unionized careers in New York City look like. In an open exhibition hall, students will move freely among tables and speak with union members representing public- and private-sector unions and building trades. You may register to bring your students to one of three one-hour sessions.

The course will examine cultural and language development factors that impact the achievement of students learning English as a new language. Participants will explore research-based pedagogical practices that can be used to design instruction that meets the needs of English Language Learners. Special emphasis will be placed on student empowerment and agency through inclusive environments and assessments. Participants will be required to complete a paper, midterm quiz and final project.

The AFT and First Book have worked together to bring books to those who need them the most and yet can least afford them. Join us on Sunday, Feb. 8 for free books for families and school staff along with LEGO boxes, a DJ, hands-on activities and treats.
