Math educators in grades 6–12 can apply for a Professional Development Scholarship from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics of up to $3,000 to finance coursework in number theory, discrete mathematics or the history of mathematics. Candidates must have taught math for at least three years, intend to remain in the classroom and be a member of the council. Proposals must include specific classes or a course of study, a budget and a letter of support from your principal.

The National Council of Teachers of English’s Cultural Diversity Grant is offered to encourage teachers in historically underrepresented groups to become presenters at the council’s national convention. A grant of $500 per proposal will be awarded to support travel costs, registration fees and other expenses associated with conference participation. Applicants must be members of the National Council of Teachers of English and have never presented at its conference, which will be held this year in Boston.

Teachers of grades 6–12 are eligible to apply for a Toshiba America Foundation Grant intended to help creative educators implement innovative ways of teaching. Grants of $5,000 or more are awarded for STEM project-based learning curricula. Toshiba will not fund hardware, such as computers, audiovisual equipment, laptops or tablets.

The Beveridge Family Teaching Prize of $1,000 is presented to a group of K–12 educators, either for excellence in teaching in the field of history education or for an innovative initiative applicable to the entire field. Teachers may apply directly or nominate colleagues. Applications must include letters of recommendation and other supporting materials.

Math educators with at least 25 years of experience may be nominated for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Lifetime Achievement Award. Criteria include achievement in leadership, teaching performance and service at the state or national/international level. Nominations must include letters of recommendation along with other supporting materials. This award may also be given posthumously. Awards are presented each year at the council’s annual meeting and exposition, which will be held this year in Chicago.

The Awesome Foundation is a global community awarding $1,000 micro grants to people and groups working on awesome projects. These grants are not exclusively for teachers, but they may apply. The application deadline is the last day of each month. Tips for submissions are to be brief, unique and specific about how you would use the grant funds. If your project is not selected in a given month, you are free to reapply.

The Pets in the Classroom Grants Program issues grants of up to $125 to teachers in pre-K to 9th grade to teach about responsible pet care and allow students to bond with animals. Funding is to be used to offset costs of pet maintenance or to purchase new pets for the classroom. Eligible pets include small mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and arachnids.

The Kids In Need Foundation’s Supply A Teacher Program provides essential classroom supplies to teachers in underserved schools who would otherwise spend their own money on materials for their students. Applications are open to teachers at schools where 50% or more of students are enrolled in the National School Lunch Program. Each teacher grantee will receive two large boxes filled with enough supplies to last for at least one semester. Pencils, pencil pouches, folders, notebooks, sharpeners, erasers, rulers and pens are included in every box and additional items are included based on student grade level.

The Fund for the City of New York honors exceptional educators in New York City public high schools with the Sloan Award for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics. Awards spotlight creative mathematics and science teachers who inspire students to excel in science and mathematics and pursue careers in related fields. Seven teachers are selected for a $5,000 award; their school’s science or mathematics department also receives $2,500. Besides being featured in a full-page ad in the New York Daily News and receiving media recognition, winners receive a commemorative video, brochure, portrait and award. Nominees must have been New York City public high school math or science teachers for at least five years and teach at least four periods a day. Nominations are welcome from administrators, colleagues, students, parents and others familiar with the teacher’s work.
