For more than 50 years, the UFT has been proud to help its members expand their skills and knowledge through courses, workshops and conferences. The UFT is excited to announce a brand-new opportunity for UFT members to participate in professional learning while earning Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) hours.
As you may know, the New York State Board of Regents recently adopted new regulations (effective July 1, 2016) requiring all teachers who hold professional certificates and paraprofessionals who hold Level III teaching assistant certificates to collect and track 100 professional development hours (known as Continuing Teacher and Leader Education hours) by a state-approved provider in five-year cycles.
As a state-approved provider of CTLE hours, the UFT has launched LearnUFT, which will offer low-cost professional learning opportunities specifically designed to meet our members’ needs. LearnUFT will offer work sessions in all five borough offices on weekends and during the summer.
Registration for our first series of two-hour Saturday work sessions is now available.
These work sessions are offered in each borough office from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Offerings include:
Getting to Know our ELLs: Understanding the Language Proficiency Levels of Our Students
In this professional learning session, participants will develop an understanding of the attributes of the various Language Proficiency Levels of ELL students. Participants will learn new techniques and instructional strategies that can be used to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of ELL students.
Developing Critical Thinkers: Engaging in Collaborative Discussions
This session will focus on the power of collaborative discussions in building students’ critical thinking skills. Participants will experience discussion techniques that enhance student engagement and deepen comprehension and expression.
Understanding Equality: Its Role in Developing Algebraic Reasoning
During this session, participants will engage in hands-on problem-solving activities designed to deepen understanding of algebraic reasoning and relational thinking. Opportunity will be provided to learn strategies designed to develop students’ understanding of the meaning of the equal sign as it relates to algebra.
Specially Designed Instruction: Putting the Individual in IEP
This session will provide educators an opportunity to develop an understanding of Specially Designed Instruction. Participants will learn specific strategies and resources to address the unique needs of students. Opportunity will be provided to plan specially designed instruction.
These UFT courses are taught by qualified veteran Teacher Center instructors. While the State Education Department requires teachers to keep their own records, the UFT is committed to archiving your certificates of completion for the duration of each five-year cycle. By completing your CTLE hours with LearnUFT, you can be sure that your records will never be lost or misplaced.
Each work session in this first series will be offered to UFT members for $30 at cost. Nonmembers will pay the market rate of $75.
Payment can be made by check or money order upon arrival. Checks should be made payable to the UFT Educational Foundation. Unfortunately, cash cannot be accepted.
We will continue to add more options for LearnUFT courses throughout the spring and summer, so please check back in with us.
