Helping students in need in honor of his son

Retired Tottenville HS teacher runs a foundation named for his late son that continues his son's good works, anonymously helping students in need with expenses such as SAT and college application fees, sports team dues, senior year events, tutoring and Chromebooks for doing homework.

Clothes closet ‘fills a need’

PS 52 in Queens, a school with a large population of students in temporary housing, has furbished a room called the community closet fully stocked with children's clothes of all sizes. “We don’t beat the drum about it, but it quietly fills a need and allows for dignity,” said one teacher.

Family Literacy and Book Fair

Hundreds of children, families and educators were able to expand their home and school libraries thanks to more than 11,000 free books given away by the AFT and the UFT on March 19 during the “Reading Opens the World” Family Literacy and Book Fair at PS 1 in Manhattan.

Outpouring of support from UFT members for Bronx fire victims

UFT members came together to raise more than $10,000 and collect and distribute supplies to support the students and families affected by the deadly apartment building blaze on Jan. 9 in the Bronx.

UFT Disaster Relief Fund aids members affected by ‘Ida’

When the remnants of Hurricane Ida came barreling through the city on Sept. 1, the UFT launched a campaign for members to donate to their colleagues coping with storm damage. More than $40,000 was raised.

Happy coats-giving!

The UFT hosted an afternoon of food, fun and free coats for students experiencing homelessness at its Thanksgiving Luncheon on Nov. 20, when more than 130 children filled Shanker Hall at UFT headquarters in Manhattan.
