Hours of the lab specialist

Article 6 of our contract states that Laboratory Specialists' hours are 6 hours and 30 minutes, not including lunch which shall not be less than 30 minutes and no longer than the lunch period of the school they are serving. If your lunch is 45 minutes, your work day is 7 hours and 15 minutes; if your lunch is 40 minutes, your work day is 7 hours and 10 minutes; if your lunch is 30 minutes, your work day is 7 hours.

Lab Specialists are entitled to 20 minutes of relief time. This relief time may be reduced or eliminated with the agreement of the appropriate school official, and if so agreed, the work day will be reduced by a corresponding amount of time.

Article 7A of our contract states that Laboratory Specialists shall not be assigned to cover classes except in emergency situations. Laboratory Specialists shall not be given assignments outside the science department, nor shall they be assigned duties within the department normally performed by other school personnel except in emergency situations. Therefore, Laboratory Specialists are not involved in Circular 6 issues.

Lab specialists are not required to remain past their regular work day for the 80 minutes of professional development nor the 75 minutes of parent engagement/other professional work required of some other titles.
