Functional chapters

Over the years, the United Federation of Teachers has grown to include many different kinds of educators and school-based professionals who share common interests and concerns. These various groups have formed chapters of their own, known as functional chapters.

Functional chapters have their own elected leadership. The interests of functional chapters are represented on union decision-making bodies such as the Executive Board and the Delegate Assembly. They hold regular meetings to map out strategy and identify members’ concerns. Some functional chapters, such as school counselors and secretaries, have their own contracts negotiated alongside the main UFT contract.
