Job opportunities for prospective applicants

All interested teachers should complete an online teacher application to be eligible for these and other opportunities that may arise throughout the summer and upcoming school year.

Hiring needs may shift over the course of the summer and we suggest that applicants check back frequently for updates. Find the most current list in the Careers in NYC Schools section of the DOE website.

If you apply for a teaching position in the New York City public school system, you must have New York State certification in the area and level you want to teach. The certification requirements for all areas along with the various pathways to certification can be found in the certification section of the New York State Education Department website.

If you have New York State certification, go to the New York City Department of Education’s TeachNYC website for more information about the application process. You can also call UFT Certification Services at 212-420-1830.

In addition to teachers, the NYC Department of Education employs a wide variety of professionals and paraprofessionals in our schools. Visit the Pupil Personnel and Substitutes tab on this site for more about these titles and how to apply.

The New York City Department of Education also hosts recruitment events and other information sessions for prospective applicants. Due to the uncertainty of hiring needs for the upcoming school year, there are no scheduled events at this time.

Interested in working as a paraprofessional in New York City public schools?

The first step is working as a substitute paraprofessional. Go to the Substitute Paraprofessional Requirements and Information page of the DOE website to find out if the DOE is accepting applications.
