Guidance for members on rating appeals processes

If you have been rated Ineffective under the APPR rating system

  • Call your UFT borough office to make an appointment with a rating appeal advisor.
  • A worksheet will be sent to you prior to your appointment.
  • Fill out the worksheet and bring it and all supporting documentation to your appointment.
  • At your appointment, your rating appeal advisor will assist you in correctly filling out your rating appeal forms, which the union will then file with the DOE’s Office of Appeals and Review on your behalf.
  • Appeal paperwork should be submitted by Oct. 15 to ensure adequate time for the union to file with the DOE.
  • The DOE’s Office of Appeals and Review will be responsible for scheduling your appeal in front of a hearing officer.

If you have been rated Unsatisfactory under Teaching for the Twenty-first Century (S/U)

  • Bring your Unsatisfactory rating form to your UFT borough office within three weeks of receipt.
  • The UFT will file a U-rating appeal with the DOE’s human resources chief executive on your behalf.
  • The DOE will be responsible for scheduling your appeal in front of a hearing officer.

If you are a probationary teacher who has been discontinued or denied tenure

  • Appeals of this type are automatic, but you should still bring your paperwork to a UFT borough office so the appeal and paperwork can be tracked by the UFT.
  • The DOE is responsible for scheduling your appeal in front of a tripartite committee of professional educators in accordance with DOE bylaws.
