Why unionize?

As family child care providers, we play a vital role in supporting New York City's working families—especially those with low incomes—by providing safe, nurturing and educational environments for their children. Our work allows parents to pursue careers and contribute to the city’s economy. Yet, despite the importance of what we do, many of us still face financial challenges and lack basic benefits like paid vacation and sick time.
That’s why we came together and joined the United Federation of Teachers (UFT). Alone, it’s hard to make our voices heard—but together, we are a powerful force for change. Through our union, we’ve made significant progress: we’ve secured increased access to healthcare, professional development and funding for essential program supplies. We’ve also recovered millions in unpaid wages for providers across the state.
We are proud to be a unionized workforce, and we continue to push for higher wages, fair benefits, clear and respectful oversight, and the dignity and recognition that all workers deserve. Change takes time, but with solidarity and persistence, we are building a better future for ourselves and the families we serve.
