Overview of Substance Misuse, Addiction and Recovery during Adolescence and Adulthood

Date
November 16, 2026
Time
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

This training explores how substance use and substance use disorders can develop across adolescence and adulthood, with attention to the biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors that may increase risk.

Participants will examine commonly used substances, gain a clearer understanding of the recovery process, and consider how changing attitudes and policies around recreational marijuana may influence substance use, treatment, and recovery. The session will also highlight important differences across age groups and provide a practical framework for understanding substance use within the broader context of an individual’s life and environment.

Participants will explore the factors that influence readiness change, learn how to identify a client’s current stage of change, and practice selecting interventions that match the client’s needs and level of readiness. The training emphasizes a flexible, modern approach to the stages of change, giving clinicians practical tools they can use to support motivation, reduce resistance, and help clients move toward meaningful, sustainable change.
