Sports, Student Athletes, and Mental Health - A New Frontier

Date
December 9, 2026
Time
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Student-athletes exist at the intersection of sport, school, family, identity, relationships, and a performance culture that can profoundly shape their mental health and well-being. Yet clinicians are not always trained to understand the unique environments and systems in which athletes develop.

This presentation invites social workers, psychologists, and other mental health professionals to explore student-athlete mental health through a whole-person, trauma-informed, and systems-based lens. Together, we will consider three central questions: How did we get here? Where can we go? And what can I do? Participants will examine the historical and cultural influences that continue to shape modern sport, consider how performance expectations, relationships, identity, and environment can affect student-athletes, and reflect on their own assumptions and biases when working with athletic populations.

The workshop will conclude with practical ways clinicians can apply greater curiosity, awareness, and context when supporting student-athletes and their families.
