Peter Saccoccio, an art teacher at PS/IS 384 in Brooklyn, had heard such positive reviews about the UFT Lunar New Year Banquet that he joined a table of other District 32 members for this year’s event to see for himself. “It’s hard to say what I enjoyed more — the roar of drums or the parade of vibrant dragons and lions dancing throughout the restaurant,” Saccoccio said, adding that it also could have been “the endless flow of food or getting to hang out with my union people.” He joined nearly 300 other UFT members and friends on Feb. 28 to celebrate the Year of the Snake at the banquet, sponsored by the UFT Asian American Heritage Committee. Former UFT District Representative and NYSUT Vice President Alan Lubin received the Marian C. Thom Award, named for the committee’s founder, who died in 2024. Lubin reminded those in attendance that “our diversity is a strength of our union” and “if you’re doing it alone, you’re doing it wrong.”
