Health care negotiations continue

The following notification was emailed to all members as part of the UFT Update on January 12, 2023:

In response to rising health care costs, the Municipal Labor Committee and the city are engaged in negotiations on health care involving both retired and in‑service members. The city and the MLC are negotiating with Aetna to create a new Medicare Advantage plan for Medicare-eligible city retirees that provides enhancements beyond what is offered in their current GHI Senior Care plan.

The city and the MLC are undergoing a negotiated acquisition procurement process allowing insurance providers to bid to offer coverage for in‑service and pre‑Medicare retiree union members that would be 10% less costly than the most‑popular city plan, GHI CBP. They will examine these proposals to see what savings can be achieved with no diminishment of benefits. The MLC’s goal at all times is for all city workers to maintain high-quality, premium free health care despite ballooning costs.
