Health care negotiations stalled
The following notification was emailed to all members as part of the UFT Update on Oct. 17, 2024:
The city and the Municipal Labor Committee’s negotiations with insurance providers on the city’s in-service and pre-Medicare health care plan have stalled due to the turmoil at City Hall. The two finalists, EmblemHealth/United Healthcare and Aetna, have been taking part in a negotiated acquisition process that allows for lots of back and forth, enabling the city and the unions to ensure that the final plan preserves the same high standard of health care. The UFT, as part of the MLC, has been pushing for major changes in the next provider contract, including guaranteed transparency on costs and data, expanded access to mental and behavioral health care, and stronger primary care and out-of-state networks. The process provides a real opportunity to improve health benefits for our members, and we will only agree to a plan that offers the same or better coverage than we now have. We don’t know when the negotiation process will resume, but we will keep you updated.
