The following notification was emailed to all members as part of the UFT Update on Jan. 29, 2026:

In the few short weeks since new City Council members were sworn in, we’ve hit the ground running. Our paraprofessionals have had meetings with at least 12 members of the city council so far and more appointments have been scheduled. 

UFT borough political action coordinators (PAC) have been making sure the concerns of our paraprofessionals are being heard and asking our legislators to sign pledges of support for our RESPECT check. These meetings are going well, and we expect to have the legislation introduced soon. We will not stop until we get our RESPECT check legislation passed.
