UFT enhances free NYC Childcare Navigator

Navigator can now help NYC families see if they qualify for WIC, SNAP and housing benefits
Press Releases

The UFT expanded its free NYC Childcare Navigator to help city families see if they are eligible for federal WIC, SNAP, and housing benefits, as well as to find childcare that fits their needs and budgets.

New York City families can now find out in less than 5 minutes whether they qualify for:

  • Federal WIC and SNAP food programs
  • The Housing Choice Voucher program (also known as Section 8)
  • One of nine free, discounted, or subsidized childcare programs

Any one of these benefits can save NYC families thousands of dollars a year.

"We continue to invest in NYC Childcare Navigator because living in New York City is expensive, and we all need to be there for each other," said Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers. "We built this tool to help our own members find and afford childcare, but we realized it could make a real difference for all families. So we made it available and free to all New York City residents, and we keep improving it," he said.

Over 10,000 NYC families have used the free UFT childcare search tool since the union opened it up to all city residents in October.

Families can search over 10,000 home-based, center-based, and school-based childcare options - the most comprehensive directory available for the five boroughs.

Listings are searchable by budget, zip code, languages spoken, hours of operation, special needs accommodated, and dozens of other parameters that families in search of childcare want to know.
