On Dec. 8, 2021, New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams announced that David Banks would become the next New York City schools chancellor.

In response, UFT President Michael Mulgrew issued the following statement: 

David Banks is an educator who cares deeply about children. We have worked well with David in the past, and we look forward to continuing that relationship as he takes on the challenge of running 1,600 schools still suffering from the effects of the pandemic.
