Update on in-service health care
The following notification was emailed to all members as part of the UFT Update on October 12, 2023:
Rising health care costs keep the Municipal Labor Committee, the umbrella group of municipal unions that negotiates health benefits for all city workers, and the city constantly working to find savings to protect our premium-free health care. A year ago, we embarked on a negotiated-acquisition process for the provider contract for the health care plan for in-service city employees and pre-Medicare-eligible retirees. Two finalists have been named. The negotiated-acquisition process permits for lots of back-and-forth between the bidders, allowing the city and the unions to ensure that the final plan preserves the same high standard of health care. Any savings achieved will be put back into our health benefits.
