Resolution against rising authoritarianism

Whereas, the UFT Retired Teachers Chapter recognizes an increase in authoritarianism; an increase in the corporate dominance of the government and economic system; and in attacks on immigrants, our students and the labor movement;

Whereas, we should link all of these above actions to rising fascism. AFT President Randi Weingarten is publishing a book on "Why Fascists Hate Teachers” partly because of how she reads the situation. This is not just about Trump but part of a series of crisis that are shaking the foundations of the U.S in the International order. We need to demonstrate our willingness to resist as millions did on Saturday, June 14, and be it

Resolved, we call on the UFT and this chapter to organize parents, teachers and our communities against fascism. The UFT shall propose this theme for the September Labor Day Parade. The union shall print signs and shirts that state "Fight Rising Fascism,” and be it further

Resolved, our chapter shall explore how to educate our 200,000 members to understand the increasing danger of fascism to working people; and be it further

Resolved, if the resolution is unsuccessful in the Central Labor Council, the RTC will organize a sign-making event with that theme for the Labor Day Parade.
