WHEREAS President Trump has made major cuts to federal programs, including the Social Security Administration (SSA), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) (including Medicare and Medicaid) and Veterans Administration (VA); and
WHEREAS President Trump, acting with DOGE, has fired over 25,000 federal workers, including at the SSA, HHS and VA; and
WHEREAS retirees, including members of the Retired Teachers Chapter (RTC) of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), rely on critical services provided by the SSA, HHS and VA; and
WHEREAS lower staffing levels are already disrupting the administration of these agencies and their ability to serve our members; and
WHEREAS as a labor union, the United Federation of Teachers has long struggled against arbitrary cuts and dismissals in our own workplaces; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Retired Teachers Chapter of the United Federation of Teachers strongly opposes President Trump's cuts to the Social Security Administration, Department of Health and Human Services and Veterans Administration; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the RTC will educate its members and the public about the critical role these agencies play in securing the health and financial well-being of retirees, including our members and on our website, social media platforms and in the pages of the New York Teacher; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the RTC will mobilize its members and engage in public actions through the RTC/UFT Labor Solidarity Project and other means to show our commitment to reversing President Trump’s cuts and restoring federal workers’ jobs; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the RTC will bring a similar resolution to the United Federation of Teachers Delegate Assembly for the consideration of our entire union.
