National Speech-Language-Hearing Month Celebration
Some 200 members and guests gathered as the UFT Speech Improvement Chapter hosted its 20th annual celebration of National Speech-Language-Hearing Month.
Award-winning topics and projects, including those that raised awareness about cerebral palsy, utilized augmentative and alternative communication devices and described strategies to address selective mutism.
Demanding what they’re owed
Fed up with the DOE’s delay in reimbursing them for travel expenses, itinerant related service providers went public with their frustrations in April. Occupational and physical therapists also called out the DOE for long delays in tuition reimbursement for coursework they need to maintain their licenses.
Better Speech and Hearing Month Celebration
The UFT Speech Improvement Chapter presented 31 awards at the 19th annual Better Speech and Hearing Month Celebration on May 27. Award-winning topics and projects included raising awareness about stuttering, communicating with devices, using a school snack shop to expand communication skills and bringing speech therapy into the classroom.
Taking stock in students’ skills
Steven Leaderman, a teacher at P370, a District 75 program in Coney Island, has created an innovative vocational program that has his students sort and deliver school supplies. The program helps the students develop key vocational and life skills that will serve them after graduation.
