Children select new backpacks at the union's fourth annual back-to-school supplies giveaway and barbecue on Staten Island.
Getting her daughter ready for kindergarten was the key reason Guzel Jach joined more than 1,000 other parents and guardians at the UFT’s fourth annual back-to-school supplies giveaway and barbecue on Aug. 7 in the schoolyard of PS 21 on Staten Island. “We’ve picked up school supplies and resources, which are really helpful. There’s so much information,” said Jach, whose child attends Staten Island’s PS 41. UFT Staten Island Borough Representative Sean Rotkowitz said the event was even bigger than last year’s. The union distributed 1,200 backpacks and other essentials with help from the union’s partners, including MetroPlusHealth insurance, Staten Island’s Alliance for North Shore Children and Families, the New York Center for Interpersonal Development, the Staten Island Performing Provider System and the Nicotra Group. “This event lets people know that teachers and staff support their children’s learning,” said Marie Rodriguez, the UFT’s parent and community outreach liaison for the borough.
