Mission & vision

MAP Substance Use

Our mission

The UFT’s Member Assistance Program is committed to fostering the emotional, social and professional well-being of all in-service UFT members throughout New York City.  We provide accessible, inclusive and mindfully engaging support through counseling, workshops and a wide variety of wellness initiatives. Our mission is to empower members to thrive by creating safe spaces for healing, growth and connection in an environment that is warm and welcoming.

Our vision

We envision creating a place where UFT members can stay connected to their well-being and have the ability to access the mental health resources they need to thrive at their jobs, in their personal life and for their communities. These proactive steps will help them be most effective, find joy in their lives and live a healthy lifestyle.

Our core values

  1. Accessibility
We champion accessible, equitable mental health and wellness services for all in-service UFT members by ensuring that the support they need is easy to find, understand, access and use.
  2. Inclusivity
We are committed to offering inclusive services that reflect the diverse identities, experiences and needs of our members.
  3. Growth, Learning & Education
We believe in lifelong education and continuous growth. We’re dedicated to providing resources, programming and professional development that evolves with our members and the ever-changing demands they face.
  4. Proactivity
We offer support to members even before challenging moments occur, by proactively offering strategies and tools to assist them with the stressors of their demanding jobs and challenges they face in their personal lives. We believe in addressing and de-escalating issues before they become larger.
  5. Union informed
Our counselors are trained to help members navigate the many departments and programs within the union and the Department of Education to achieve their goals.
  6. Confidentiality
We are committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all members, in accordance with New York State laws and ethical clinical standards. This is supported by the UFT/Member Assistance Notice of Privacy Practices.
