STICKIN' WITH THE UNION: At the UFT Asian Heritage Committee's Moon Festival celebration on Sept. 26, Rosemarie Young, a teacher at PS 124 in Manhattan, and Melissa Wong, a teacher and chapter leader at the same school, took part in a "chopsticks challenge," picking up beans and marbles with chopsticks.

This Week's Focus

Create a team for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Every October, thousands of UFT members come together to participate in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks in the five boroughs and on Long Island. Chapter leaders can create teams for their chapter members to fundraise and support one another. To form a team, select a walk and then click "Sign Up." When it's time to name your team, be sure to include "UFT" in the name. Let your chapter's members know your team's name so they can select it when they sign up to walk.

This year, the walks in Manhattan (Central Park), Queens (Flushing Meadows Corona Park) and Long Island (Jones Beach State Park) will take place on Sunday, Oct. 18. The walks in Brooklyn (Coney Island Boardwalk), the Bronx (Orchard Beach) and Staten Island (Midland Beach) will take place on Sunday, Oct. 25. All the walks begin at 8 a.m., except for the Long Island walk, which has a rolling start time. More details, including online registration and each walk's UFT Strides coordinator, can be found on the UFT website.

Report class size data to your district rep on Oct. 7

We are addressing the contractual class size issues that school chapter leaders reported on Days 6, 10 and 14. These contractual class size limits are separate and apart from implementation of the state's class size law. The next key reporting day is Day 19 (Wednesday, Oct. 7). Please obtain your school's RACL (elementary or middle schools) or Master Schedule Final (high schools), which indicates class sizes on these dates. For most schools, the oversize classes that remained unresolved by Day 14 (Sept. 30) will go to your district representative and superintendent to tackle. On the 21st day, unresolved cases escalate a step higher to the central Class Size Labor-Management Committee.

The 2018 contract created a special additional step for schools that are chronically out of compliance, defined as having oversized classes for four of the past six school years. These schools are escalated to the Class Size Labor-Management Committee once the overages are reported to the union. If the Class Size Labor-Management Committee cannot resolve the issue, the case is scheduled for expedited arbitration as soon as 10 days later — and no later than the 34th school day of the term. The arbitrator can issue a binding remedy within five school days that the DOE must implement in five school days.

ACTION YOU NEED TO TAKE:

Send the class size data for your school on Day 19 of the school year to your UFT district representative. Reach out to your district rep if you have any questions.

Be aware of new school leadership team changes

School leadership teams are important tools for change in our schools. The DOE is mandated to provide training for all principals, superintendents and SLT members. Chancellor's Regulation A‑655 is changing this year, so please make sure that your principal is aware and that your SLT gets the training to learn about the differences. The DOE has provided the following documents to support SLTs in understanding the changes.

The DOE announced Teacher's Choice allotments

The popular Teacher's Choice program continues this school year, with eligible UFT-represented educators receiving a reimbursement for some of the supplemental instructional supplies they buy. We secured the same level of funding for the program as last year, but because the city hired over 4,000 additional new educators this fall, the per-member amount of Teacher's Choice changed slightly.

Here are the Teacher's Choice spending amounts by title.

TITLEAMT
Teachers$220
School counselors$95
Social workers and psychologists$95
Teachers assigned$95
Occupational and physical therapists$80
School nurses$80
Lab specialists$70
Paraprofessionals$55
School secretaries$50

The purchasing period began on Aug. 1 and continues until Jan. 8. You can find more information, including purchasing and paperwork deadlines, on the Teacher's Choice page of the UFT website.

Tell Gov. Hochul to opt out of vouchers

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she is considering opting into the new federal school voucher tax credit program, but doing so would have a devastating impact on our public schools.

The new federal law, which takes effect in January in states that opt in, will reroute billions of dollars to private schools for students whose families have never sent their children to public schools. We must safeguard New York State public schools, which educate 90% of our children.

On Sept. 16, we joined our state union, NYSUT, and dozens of labor, parent, education and civil rights groups to launch our anti-voucher campaign. The message was clear: The governor needs to reject the voluntary federal tax-credit program. You can add your voice to the call to protect public education by signing the petition.

Tell Gov. Hochul to opt out

Learn more about the trouble with vouchers on this episode of the "UFT On Air" podcast. Let's show the governor that we stand strong in support of our public schools and reject any efforts to weaken them.

To Do #1

Ask members to wear pink on Oct. 14

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, the same day as the Delegate Assembly, your chapter can show its support for breast cancer awareness by wearing pink. Post this flyer on your UFT bulletin board or distribute it in mailboxes. Each year, we send a UFT photographer to two or three schools.

  • If a UFT photographer has not come to your school since the pandemic to take photos of members wearing pink, please send an email request to New York Teacher Editor Dara Sharif at dsharif [at] uft [dot] org (dsharif[at]uft[dot]org). In your email, tell us if there is a particular member of your school community whom you are supporting or commemorating.
  • Take photos of your members wearing pink and post them on Instagram and tag them @uftny so we can include them in our Instagram story.
  • Please send your best one or two photos (large size, with captions) to uftphotos [at] gmail [dot] com (uftphotos[at]gmail[dot]com) for us to share on social media.

To Do #2

Contract survey: Remind members to sign up for UFT emails by Oct. 16

This fall, our 750-member contract negotiation committee will enter negotiations with the DOE to craft our next contract. It is crucial that the committee hears from all UFT members about what rights and benefits are important to them. The UFT will send out a survey about contract priorities this fall. In the meantime, please make sure members at your school are subscribed to UFT emails. It's the best way to ensure they receive the survey and make their voices heard.

To Do #3

Alert your principal to new guidance for immigrant safety

Thanks to your tireless advocacy, the UFT has won two new victories in the fight to protect our immigrant community!

First, the DOE has provided principals with updated protocols for dealing with non-local law enforcement (NLLE). You can find more information about the protocols on the DOE website and read the documents by logging into the DOE InfoHub. These protocols include how to address the presence of NLLE, including ICE, during dismissal and field trips. Please contact your principal for further details.

Second, principals must each designate a Project Open Arms point person (POAPP) in Galaxy to support immigrant students and families. The DOE will provide POAPPs with resources and training to help students navigate school systems, connect to essential services and access academic and social-emotional supports, as well as help families identify and access available immigration-related resources.

And if you are personally affected by changing immigration policy and in need of support, please contact UFT ELL specialist Katie Kurjakovic at KKurjakovic [at] uft [dot] org (KKurjakovic[at]uft[dot]org).

To Do #4

Nominate an outstanding new educator to be featured in the New York Teacher

We are looking for dynamic new UFT members (with one to three years of service) to feature in the Building Your Career section of the New York Teacher and on the union website. Please nominate a teacher or a school related professional (a speech teacher, paraprofessional, school counselor, occupational/physical therapist or other title) in their first three years on the job as a New York City educator.

To Do #5

Make sure new teachers have assigned mentors

Every new teacher in your school without at least two years of prior teaching experience must have mentoring. As the chapter leader, you are a required member of your school's new teacher induction committee, which ensures new teachers receive this mentoring. The mentor should be an experienced classroom teacher, coach or lead teacher, ideally in the new teacher's subject area. The mentor will provide a minimum of two periods a week of confidential, non-evaluative and nonjudgmental support. Ask your principal for a list of new teachers and their mentors. If new teachers at your school have not been assigned a mentor, or if you have questions about the mentor program, contact your UFT district representative.

To Do #6

Flyers to share with your members

Here are flyers you can print and distribute in member mailboxes or post on your school's UFT bulletin board.

Work in progress

The UFT is tackling the following issues with the DOE and other city, state and federal-level entities as appropriate:

  • Fixing problems with the DOE's rollout of the AI and screen time guidance.
  • Preparing for the upcoming contract campaign and negotiations.
  • Pushing the DOE to provide clear timelines for the Accessible Tool for Learning About Students (ATLAS) rollout.

You Should Know

Contract empowerment & enforcement

Be mindful of grievance timelines

Article 22 of the DOE-UFT contract for teachers (and corresponding articles in other contracts) requires that members file non-salary grievances within 30 school days of the violation. While the clock stops over the summer for most grievances, keep in mind that 30 school days from the last day of school in June is Oct. 21. Members must file salary grievances within three months of the date of knowledge of a violation (excluding the summer months), so a salary violation that occurred in June must be grieved by November. We've noticed an uptick in grievances from teachers who are not advancing properly on the salary scale due to the DOE's error in calculating their anniversary and/or equate date. That issue can be raised through a salary grievance. Affected teachers should reach out to their UFT borough office promptly to file a salary grievance. If you're not sure about the timeliness of a grievance a member wants to file, please contact your UFT district rep or the UFT grievance liaison in your borough office for guidance.

Be mindful of timelines for appeals of final ratings

The UFT Grievance Department is processing and filing rating appeals from the 2025-26 school year. If any teachers in your school have been rated Ineffective under the APPR rating system, they should call their UFT borough office as soon as possible to make an appointment with a rating appeal adviser. Appeal paperwork should be submitted by Oct. 15. If members have been rated Unsatisfactory under the S/U rating system, they need to bring their Unsatisfactory rating form to their borough UFT office within three weeks of receipt. Probationary teachers who have been discontinued or denied tenure may also file an appeal if they wish.

Brewing Wellness podcast about high-functioning women

Check out the latest episode of Brewing Wellness, a podcast created by the UFT's Member Assistance Program to support the mental health and well-being of our members. For school-based professionals, being capable, dependable and always ready to take on the next thing can feel like a strength — but what happens when the pressure to keep it together comes at the expense of your own well-being? In this episode of the Brewing Wellness podcast, Irene Zajac, an integrative health coach and educator, and Mandy Paraponiaris, a 3rd-grade teacher in Brooklyn, explore why those who spend their days caring for and supporting others may be especially vulnerable to burnout. They discuss how to make space for rest without guilt and why making time for yourself can support your resilience and well-being.

Salary & personnel

All new pedagogues should fill out a salary-step placement application

All pedagogues who are eligible for salary steps and differentials must apply using the online Salary Application Portal for DOE employees. Pedagogues have two applications: one for salary steps (credit for previous qualifying professional experience with the DOE or elsewhere) and one for differentials (credit for additional education). New hires applying for credit for previous qualifying professional experience must also use the portal.

All new pedagogues should fill out a salary-step placement application, even if they do not have prior experience, to establish their "equate date," the date from which future steps can be computed. Without an equate date, members will only go up one step each year instead of two.

All paraprofessionals eligible for a salary upgrade based on their education and/or experience must apply using the online Salary Application Portal for DOE employees.

The portal gets busy, so it may slow down or freeze at times. Transcripts must be original, and a watermark must be visible. All prior work experience must have a verification letter from former employers; verification of employment forms from the state will not be accepted.

Apply for a spring study sabbatical by Oct. 26

Eligible teachers who want time to study to enhance their teaching skills during the spring 2027 term have until Oct. 26, 2026, to submit an application in SOLAS for a study sabbatical. Spring semester study sabbaticals are available only for middle and high school classroom teachers with seven years of service. The applications become available on Oct. 5. The deadline for a principal's recommendation to the superintendent is Nov. 3. Coursework must be rigorous and related to the teacher's teaching appointment. During a study sabbatical, teachers earn 70% of their full salary. Members can find out more in the sabbatical leaves section of the UFT website. Members can read the current guidelines, deadlines and eligibility requirements in the DOE sabbatical memo, which the DOE updates and reissues each spring, and Chancellor's Regulation C-650 on Sabbatical Leaves of Absence.

Deadline to apply for school-based parking permits

It's time for school-based UFT members to apply for their new parking permits. The DOE's self-service portal is now open and available for applications through Wednesday, Oct. 7. (Please note: The portal works best in Google Chrome.) The following parking permits are available to UFT members if there are DOT-designated on-street parking spaces at your school:

  • On-street general (OSG) parking
  • Itinerant on-street (OSI) parking

The DOE will deliver parking permits to your school by Friday, Oct. 30. Last year's parking permits expire on Nov. 1. Please remember to tell your members that OSG parking permits are school-specific. These permits specify the school name and the designated streets for parking. School-based staff who work at more than one school are issued itinerant on-street (OSI) parking permits for use at assigned schools with available DOT-designated street-parking spaces. These spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you have questions, email DOEParkingPermits [at] schools [dot] nyc [dot] gov (DOEParkingPermits[at]schools[dot]nyc[dot]gov).
