The Teacher’s Choice program will again reimburse UFT-represented educators for some of their out-of-pocket expenses for supplemental instructional supplies and materials of their choice.
The exact allotments for the 2026–27 school year were not yet available as of press time, but the UFT advocated strongly for the City Council to continue funding for the program. The 2026–27 city budget includes about $20 million for Teacher’s Choice.
The program reimburses educators for the purchase of educational materials that have not been provided by the city Department of Education. Educators cannot use program funds to pay for class trips or to buy furniture, gifts for students or equipment that requires special wiring or installation. Eligible purchases must be made between Aug. 1, 2006, and mid-January, 2027. Reimbursements are included in educators’ paychecks.
Participants must submit receipts along with a DOE statement of purpose/accountability form by the January deadline. If not, the DOE will take back the money. Anyone who does not wish to participate must file a request for nonparticipation (opt-out) form. Visit the Teacher's Choice page on UFT's website for more information.
