Over 100 students, family members and educators gathered in Shanker Hall on May 21 to celebrate Students of NYC, a UFT social media initiative highlighting the stories of middle and high school students. UFT President Michael Mulgrew and New York City Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels attended, along with about 30 students who have been featured by Students of NYC . “We work so hard to support teachers,” said Emily James, who created the initiative in 2023. “But what means the most to our members is the kids. We elevate their work by showcasing their kids.” Yukie Trevathan, who teaches at Belmont Preparatory HS in the Bronx, nominated four of the featured students, including her student Selina, who attended the celebration with her family. “Students of NYC is about us,” Selina said. “It’s about who we are, not just who we’re going to be.”
