Golf “buddies” teacher Conor Callaghan of P23Q in Queens, paraprofessional Jasminie Jones of P4 @ 179 in Queens, Chapter Leader Tom Conaboy of PS 70 in the Bronx and teacher Maggie Joyce of PS 35 in the Bronx enjoy time on the green.

On the morning of Oct. 12, paraprofessional Jasminie Jones showed up alone to the UFT’s Invitational Golf Outing at Silver Lake Golf Course on Staten Island. By the end of the day, she said, “I had more friends than I knew I could make.”

Jones, who works at P4 @ 179, a District 75 program in Fresh Meadows, Queens, was one of over 100 golfers who attended the annual fundraiser for the UFT Disaster Relief Fund. This year’s outing, which included a standard round of golf, remarks from UFT President Michael Mulgrew, lunch and prizes, raised over $75,000.

“I was on my feet all day,” said UFT Chief Technology Officer Bill Barrett, who co-chaired the event along with UFT Welfare Fund Executive Director Geof Sorkin. But it was all worth it, Barrett said, to “infuse so much cash in one short day into the relief fund.”

“It’s rewarding to have fun while also giving back,” agreed Jones, a first-time golfer.
