Resolution to endorse Thomas M. Brown for re-election to the NYC Teachers’ Retirement Board
WHEREAS, Thomas M. Brown has served the pension system with dedication since 1997, including his role as a UFT Special Representative in the Pension Department since 2007; and
WHEREAS, he has educated tens of thousands of members through school visits, pension clinics, workshops, training programs for pension consultants, and works with the Retired Teachers’ Chapter and is co-editor of Secure Your Future in the New York Teacher; and
WHEREAS, since his election to the Retirement Board in 2014, Thomas M. Brown has served with honorable distinction as Teacher-Trustee of the Teachers’ Retirement System; and
WHEREAS, Thomas M. Brown currently serves as Chairman of the Board at the NYC Teachers’ Retirement System, working collaboratively with the other trustees of the Board; and
WHEREAS, Thomas M. Brown actively participates in national and local pension organizations such as the National Council on Teacher Retirement (NCTR), the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems (NCPERS), the Council of Institutional Investors (CII), and the National Association of Securities Professionals(NASP) and attends numerous committees and conferences in New York City and throughout the country that are dedicated to support and protect defined benefit pension plans; and
WHEREAS, his pension improvement program includes securing sound pension funding, safeguarding TRS investments, equalizing benefits, improving COLA, strengthening the TDA, enhancing disability benefits, expanding pension credit eligibility, and improving TRS services, including the implementation of the new Roth Option; and
WHEREAS, Thomas M. Brown is actively engaged in pension advocacy, with an emphasis on Tier 6 reform and member pension equity, while upholding fiduciary duties and long-term fund sustainability; and
WHEREAS, Thomas M. Brown works closely and collaboratively with the other Teacher-Members of the Retirement Board, Victoria Lee, and Christina McGrath, and has their wholehearted support in protecting and advancing the retirement interests of all members of the system; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the United Federation of Teachers endorses Thomas M. Brown for election as a Teacher-Member of the Teachers’ Retirement Board of the City of New York for a three-year term beginning in 2026.
