Resolution to stand in solidarity with AFGE Local 3911 and support the memorial vigil for Alex Pretti
The following resolution was passed by the UFT Executive Board on Jan. 26, 2026.
WHEREAS Alex Pretti was killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis on January 24; and
WHEREAS, this is the second instance, following the killing of Renee Good, of a person in Minneapolis being murdered by ICE agents simply for exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right to assemble; and
WHEREAS these two deaths are a part of nine ICE related deaths in 2026 of people of color as of today across the United States: including Keith Porter, Jr., Geraldo Lunas Campos, Luis Gustavo Nunez Caceres, Luis Beltran Yanez-Cruz, Parady La, Victor Manuel Diaz, and Heber Sanchez Dominguez; and
WHEREAS Mr. Pretti was a VA Nurse and a member of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE); and
WHEREAS AFGE Local 3911 has called for a vigil to be held Thursday, January 29, at 5pm in front of the Manhattan VA located at 423 East 23rd Street in Manhattan; and
WHEREAS the UFT is committed to standing against violence caused by the overreaching of ICE agents throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS the next Delegate assembly will not be held until after that vigil; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the UFT Executive Board will inform members of the vigil so that those members may attend as a show of support for Mr. Pretti, his family, the AFGE and all people opposed to the violent conduct of ICE; and be it further
RESOLVED that the UFT stands in opposition to the violent conduct of ICE and will continue to advocate for the safety of union members and all individuals exercising their First Amendment rights.
