Supervisors of School Security are employed by the New York City Police Department School Safety Division, the school police force for New York City Department of Education schools. Our mission is to provide a safe environment, conducive to learning, where students and faculty can be free from hostility and disruptions which can negatively impact the educational process.
The New York City Board of Education Division of School Safety merged with the New York City Police Department on Dec. 20, 1998. Our division has more than 5,500 school safety agents and 200 uniformed police officers covering over 1.1 million students in city schools. Our UFT chapter, Supervisors of School Security, has approximately 120 supervisors working out of various commands throughout the five boroughs.
Here are the provisions from the 2023 Memorandum of Agreement pertaining to Supervisors of School Security:
- The chapter leader will be given one day of paid release time per week for the investigation of grievances and other union work.
- There is a new process for supervisors of school security to reach out to their commanding officer when there is an issue with locker access.
- A new labor management committee is being established to discuss the creation of a mentor program for supervisors of school security.
