DOE Chapters

The UFT represents many employees other than teachers, both in the school system and beyond. Paraprofessionals, school counselors, secretaries and others participate in their local school-based chapters, but they are also part of union-wide “functional” chapter based on their titles.

  • Administrative Education Officers and Analysts
Administrative education officers and analysts plan and develop New York City education programs and manage the distribution of school funds, following guidelines set by the DOE. These supervisory roles require extensive analysis, research and the ability to work effectively with different departments and agencies citywide.
  • Adult Education
The Adult Education Chapter believes that well educated parents are more likely to have children who succeed in school. We emphasize family education and lifelong learning.
  • Attendance Teachers
Attendance teachers are responsible for making sure individual students attend school and informing the school of any emerging attendance trends or issues.
  • Audiologists
Audiologists work to ensure that hearing-impaired and deaf students receive the services they need to excel in all areas of academic life.
  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education Services
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education Services (DHHES) is committed to promoting challenging educational experiences for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Directors of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Programs
The directors of alcohol and substance abuse programs are responsible for the year-round administration, supervision, work-plan development and implementation to prevent alcohol and substance abuse among students in the New York City school system.
  • Education Officers and Education Analysts
Members of the Education Officers and Analysts Chapter may create budget plans, facilitate school programs or conduct related research that supports important DOE services.
  • Educational Vision Services
The Educational Services Chapter comprises educators in the New York City public schools who serve the blind or visually impaired in every grade and at every developmental level.
  • Homebound
Members of the Homebound Chapter teach students who must remain at home because of a medical, orthopedic or serious emotional condition.
  • Hospital Schools
  • Lab Specialists
Laboratory specialists and laboratory technicians enforce safety standards in the city’s schools science rooms and laboratories where educators and students conduct experiments.
  • LYFE
The Living for the Young Family (LYFE) program provides child care for teen parents enrolled in high school or high school equivalency programs.
  • Occupational and Physical Therapists
Occupational and physical therapists are licensed professionals who work to improve physical abilities, adapt surroundings and teach new skills to students.
  • Paraprofessionals
UFT paraprofessionals work in the classroom as part of an educational team providing educational and supportive services to children. The teacher is the team leader and has sole responsibility for introducing new material. The paraprofessional is the reinforcer for the teacher's lessons.
  • Re-Start Program
  • School Counselors
School counselors are trained to service the entire K to 12 school communities including students, families, staff and school leadership.
  • School Nurses
The UFT school nurses chapter has come a long way since its founding in 1980. We started with only 25 nurses and now have almost 600 UFT school nurses.
  • School Secretaries
About 3,000 school secretaries provide support services for students, families, teachers and administrators to help schools run smoothly.
  • Sign Language Interpreters
These members advocate for and promote cross-cultural communication while providing interpreting services and outreach to the DOE community.
  • Social Workers and Psychologists
  • Speech Improvement
There are approximately 3,600 speech improvement teachers, the majority of whom are also licensed speech language pathologists working for the New York City Department of Education, who work in many different settings with a variety of different populations.
  • Supervisors of Nurses and Therapists
Our chapter is made up of clinical supervisors for occupational therapists, physical therapists and school nurses in the five boroughs in both regional and District 75 programs.
  • Teachers Assigned
Teachers Assigned are DOE employees covered by the UFT teachers contract who serves in jobs within programs in a district, region or the central DOE. A Teacher Assigned typically serves students and staff in several school organizations if not the entire public school system.
