Common planning time is integral to the integrated co-teaching program. The need has been recognized by the DOE since the program’s inception. According to a Q&A (LINK: https://www.uft.org/files/attachments/special-ed-faq.pdf) issued by the DOE, co‐teachers must collaboratively plan, prepare, and facilitate lessons, activities and projects. They must be provided regular common planning time during the work day (i.e., time dedicated for Professional Development; time dedicated for Other Professional Work; professional activity assignments; and prep periods).
If co-teachers do not have common planning time, they should consult with their chapter leader to assess if there is an operational concern that needs to be addressed. In addition, if the lack of planning time is negatively impacting the ability of students with disabilities to meet their goals, the member can file a special education complaint.
