Teachers from JHS 185 in Queens are all smiles as they gather for a performance of "Sunset Blvd." with fellow UFT members.

Some 500 UFT members celebrated Educators Night on Broadway on March 11 at a performance of “Sunset Blvd.” at the St. James Theatre. The special event, which the union organized in collaboration with the Broadway League, cost members just a $5 donation to the UFT Disaster Relief Fund benefiting Los Angeles firefighters. “Sharing the show with our members is a way to thank them for the work they do every day,” said UFT President Michael Mulgrew. The show’s star, Mandy Gonzalez, whose family includes a UFT-represented public school teacher, specifically invited UFT members to attend her performance. After the show, several Federation of Nurses/UFT members who were unjustly fired by NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn and later vindicated were escorted backstage to meet Gonzalez and the rest of the cast. Angelica Carrera, a paraprofessional at PS 242 in Queens, said the performance left her emotional, and that getting to enjoy it along with other educators was a bonus. “It felt good. Oh, it felt good,” Carrera said. “We were laughing and we were screaming.”
