DOE guidance on June 6 clerical day and religious observance

The DOE has issued the following guidance about June 6, 2025, for school-based employees:

Updated Guidance: Eid al-Adha Religious Observance and June 6 Clerical Day

Pursuant to the 2024–2025 school year calendar, all schools are closed on June 5, in recognition of Eid al-Adha and Anniversary Day. Please note that the actual date of Eid al-Adha may vary from year to year. As such, while our school calendar observes the holiday on June 5, the religious observance is expected to begin at sundown on June 5 and extend through June 6 this year.

Staff may request time off for religious observance on June 6, 2025. All requests should be considered in a manner consistent with Chancellor’s Regulation C-606, which allows for time off for holy day observance.

School supervisors may first discuss whether a modified schedule can accommodate the request (e.g., an early departure). If an employee requires a full day off for religious observance, then supervisors should consider if this request can be accommodated based on the needs of the school and factors outlined in Chancellor’s Regulation C-606.

Clerical Day (June 6): As an update to the previous message on Reporting Guidance for June Clerical Days for School Based Staff, June 6 will now be a remote Clerical Day for certain staff, as outlined below:

  • Remote Day for Staff: As noted in the 2024–25 School Year Calendar, June 6 is a Clerical Day for 3-K, pre-K, K–5, K–6, 6–8, and K–12 schools and District 75 programs only.
  • Students in these schools are not in attendance.
  • Staff in these schools will now work remotely for the regular contractual workday.
  • The purpose of this day is to allow these staff time to complete the various administrative tasks and may include, but are not limited to: preparing report cards and finalizing gradebooks; documenting student areas for improvement for summer; organizing promotion portfolios electronically to share with summer school teachers; data-sharing for articulation purposes from one grade to another; and/or planning for Summer Rising.

In-Person for Students and Staff: Students and staff in 9–12 and 6–12 schools in districts 1–32 are in attendance (in-person) for a regular day of instruction on June 6. Students who need to be absent, late or depart early for observance of Eid al-Adha may be excused pursuant to Chancellor’s Regulation A-630.
